Join the Breakthrough Community and make a lasting impact on our students!

Volunteer with us to help students craft college essays or prepare scholarships applications, tutor one-on-one after school or help our staff with events and communications. Breakthrough offers a variety of summer and year-round volunteer opportunities. Based on the different opportunities, all volunteers will be given initial trainings and tips to help guide them through the volunteer process and experience. Please note, Breakthrough volunteer opportunities take place at a variety of locations in addition to the Breakthrough office. Therefore, reliable transportation is required. See the Volunteer Opportunities below:

Summer Volunteer Opportunities (no training required)

For volunteers who aren’t able to make a weekly commitment – this is for you! Volunteer with us this summer by providing feedback to our student’s end of summer presentations. Every summer our students practice their presentation skills by showing volunteers what they learned. These events will be happening from July 19th through the 26th during the lunch hours of 11:30 – 1:30pm. No experience is needed. Choose the event that best fit your schedule and really make a difference to a student this summer!

Full schedule here.

Year-Round Volunteer Opportunities

Work directly with a specific middle or high school student to support their academic progress. Possible activities may include:  meeting with the student once a week during lunch or after school at their campus, encouraging good study habits and organization, tutoring if able, helping student research high school or college options, and communicating regularly with the Breakthrough Case Manager about the student’s academic progress.
Help students build their academic skills by providing them with the tools to be successful students. Possible activities may include:  helping student study for a math quiz or understand a science problem, or motivating a student to meet deadlines on time and keep up their grades.
Support our students by reviewing their high school and college applications. Possible activities may include:  offering application feedback, guiding student through essay writing and revision process, and keeping students on a step-by-step timeline for achieving these goals, and assisting student applicant and their family at one or more fall workshop events.
Provide critical support to a host of projects and events such as celebrations and workshops throughout the year. This opportunity is especially convenient for tutors looking for a shorter-term commitment, a more flexible schedule, or a particular project to support.
Support Breakthrough staff with daily tasks, projects, outreach to families, workshop planning and resource preparation. Successful associates commit to a regular weekly schedule; however, the number of hours varies depending on the schedule of the volunteer.
For more information on levels or commitment and availability, contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Elvira Marin at Elvira@breakthroughctx.org.

Become a college application coach!

We are seeking college application coaches to meet regularly with high school seniors in Manor and Austin to help them research college options, set application goals, write essays, meet submission deadlines and just in general support a student on their college application path. This is a great opportunity for volunteers looking to get to know one student well and work together to reach the student’s goal of getting into their school of choice. We especially need coaches to support our students in Manor ISD.
