STUDENTS WITH ACADEMIC & ATHLETIC GOALS (SWAAG)

In addition to twelve years of comprehensive academic support, Breakthrough has also developed specialized advising and robust resources to support our student athletes.  We recognize the importance of supporting student athletics and the direct relationship athletic success has with academic success. In fact, student athletes often perform better in the classroom, develop impressive time management skills, feel motivated to complete their degree, and often experience a smoother transition into the college lifestyle.

Breakthrough currently supports nearly 150 student athletes and approximately 2300 students overall.  Our team of knowledgeable SWAAG advisors are committed to helping student athletes pursue their dreams of high school and college athletics and beyond.  Our advisors have developed an extensive “Playbook” which offers  everything from recruitment, classification and alignment information to standards of eligibility and athletic scholarship support.

While Breakthrough advisors are committed to supporting students with their athletic goals, we also recognize that only 2% of all student athletes go on to become professional athletes.  We believe that by exposing our students to a vast array of careers in professional athletics, we can better support their college and career goals.

Our Goals:

  • Identifying and supporting student-athletes interested in playing collegiate sports
  • Gather and deliver information on recruiting practices and processes
  • Support on how to incorporate athletic goals into college options advising
