Donor Spotlight: Michele Rosas at Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Rusche Foundation

For the Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Rusche Foundation, education has long been a cornerstone of its philanthropic vision — a value rooted in the belief, championed by previous generations, that opportunity begins with access to learning and support. As a Pathways to Opportunity Investor, the Foundation is helping Breakthrough strengthen that pathway for first‑generation college students through mentorship, guidance, and long‑term investment in their success.

We spoke with Michele Rosas, Executive Director of the Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Rusche Foundation, about how her family’s commitment to education shapes their giving, why next‑generation philanthropy matters, and the future she hopes their investment will help make possible.

Q&A with Michele

What inspired the Mr. & Mrs. Nelson Rusche Foundation to support Breakthrough and become a Pathways to Opportunity Investor?

My grandfather believed deeply in the power of education, and this is a strong pillar of the Foundation’s giving. Breakthrough’s work helps students feel supported and empowered to attain a post-secondary education. This work is so meaningful and would have resonated with my grandfather as it does for all of us. It was a no-brainer for us to support this work.

What part of Breakthrough’s mission feels most meaningful to you?

The support and mentorship piece of Breakthrough’s mission feels most meaningful. We believe this piece drives Breakthrough’s strong outcomes.

What impact do you hope your investment will have on students’ college and career success?

We hope our investment will have a ripple effect over generations as first-generation college students meet educational and career milestones and, in doing so, paves the way for future generations to do the same.

How does your giving to Breakthrough align with your hopes for a more equitable Central Texas?

Giving to Breakthrough feels like a partnership, in which we, together, are pouring into the success of first-generation students in hopes of a future where everyone in the community is empowered to take advantage of opportunity.

On Next-Generation Philanthropy

Why is it important for the next generation of philanthropists to step up — especially now?

It is important for the next generation of philanthropists to step up because today’s philanthropic efforts are shaping the landscape of tomorrow’s community. Even small contributions, collectively, can have a big impact in strengthening our community.

What is your approach when it comes to philanthropy and giving back?

We try to be thoughtful, responsive, and intentional in our giving, with the overall goal of making the world a better place. To us, philanthropy is a group effort. Great outcomes are not possible without the giving of time, talent, and treasure, without different perspectives, and without dedicated people.

How does your approach build on the Foundation’s legacy?

Our approach to giving mirrors my grandfather’s approach to giving in a lot of ways. We are lucky to have had a great role model for what it means to be a philanthropist. He gave to work he believed in, and he saw the importance of working together to better the community. We try to continue to give in this way.

What do you hope your contributions help make possible for the future?

We hope our contributions will help create a stronger, more equitable community and world.

We are deeply grateful to the Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Rusche Foundation for their partnership and vision. Together, we are building pathways to opportunity — and ensuring that every student who aspires to earn a postsecondary credential has the support to make it possible.
