In solidarity with our AAPI students, families, and staff
Dear Breakthrough Central Texas Students, Families, and Community Members,
We are saddened, horrified, and angered by the murders in Atlanta last week that resulted in the deaths of 8 individuals, 6 of whom were Asian/Asian American women, and the rise in racism and xenophobia targeted at Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities across our country.
Breakthrough loudly affirms it stands with its AAPI community in Breakthrough Central Texas and with AAPI communities everywhere. Below are a few resources as we navigate this most recent incident and work collectively to support antiracism efforts and to support our community:
- Act to Change
- National Asian American Pacific Islander Mental Health Association
- Asian American Advancing Justice-Atlanta
- Austin Asian Chamber of Commerce
- Austin ISD Equity Office Brief in Support of AAPI Students and Families
- American Psychiatric Association on Trauma Recover
- Teaching for Tolerance Resource “From Mourning to Action”
We are steadfast in our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and in our stance against hatred, racism, and violence. To our AAPI community members, we are with you and we will continue to advocate for change, equity, and justice.
We are also saddened to see another incident of horror occurred this week in Boulder, Colorado, causing us all to once again grapple with our nation’s history of mass violence. As we look to talk to each other and our young people about violence and trauma, please consider the below:
- American Psychiatric Association on Trauma Recover
- Teaching for Tolerance Resource “From Mourning to Action”
- National Institute of Mental Health, Coping with Traumatic Events
Sincerely,
Michael Griffith
