This summer, we had a record number of Breakthrough middle school, high school and college students spend their summer with us, including our first class of 60 sixth graders from Del Valle ISD! Here’s what our Breakthrough summer looked like:
700 middle school students
in Austin, Manor and Del Valle engaged in our 6-week academically intensive summer program
400 high school students
attended Breakthrough’s Leadership, Professional Experience and Application Istitutes
50 recent high school graduates
prepared for their path to college in the fall, having 157 distinct college acceptance letters to 43 colleges
Close to 250 college students
continued their journey to becoming first-generation college graduates
SUMMER ENDS ON A HIGH NOTE
Breakthrough students of all ages worked hard over the summer. They learned a lot, had new experiences, and participated in interesting projects. At the end of it all, students prepared presentations to share their new knowledge with the community.
These Presentations of Learning were an invaluable opportunity for students to practice their communication skills and learn from community role models. We owe many thanks to the close to 400 volunteers who shared their time with our students to review their presentations. From 6th graders who showed off their marble roller coasters and explained the physics behind them, to current college students who presented on their summer internships, everyone learned something and benefitted from the opportunity to practice speaking in front of a professional audience.
