Legal Aid

Immigrant students with an authorization letter from Breakthrough Central Texas can receive free legal advice from Catholic Charities at its Austin location. These services include a comprehensive initial consultation, advice on applying for and renewing DACA, TPS or other immigration visas and advice on many immigration legal matters by certified Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) lawyers.

Private Institutions Tool (Higher Ed Immigration Portal) 

This private institution interactive tool tracks admission and financial aid policies for undocumented students interested in attending a private college or university. This tool was inspired by a high school student who collected data from 200+ private institutions when he was applying to college and found it difficult and time-consuming to identify what type of support each institution provided for undocumented students. The tool will eventually include data for refugee/displaced, undocumented graduate students, and other immigrant-origin students. Learn more here.

Austin ISD

Start Date: September 8

Manor ISD

Start Date: August 17

Manor ISD will have its first day of school on Aug. 17. On Aug. 3, the board of trustees approved a four-week extension to keep the district in “virtual learning mode” through Oct. 12. Parents will eventually have two options for their students: they can choose the distance-only model for the school year, or they can choose the transitional model, where students start the school year with 100% distance learning and then, if conditions permit, begin attending school on campus after Oct. 12.

Del Valle ISD

Start Date: August 17

The district intends to start its school year on Aug. 17, with 100% remote learning for at least eight weeks. Whenever in-person instruction does resume, Del Valle ISD has said it plans to continue offering an online option, within State guidelines

St. Stephen’s Episcopal School

Plans for Classes after Sept. 7:

Continue our remote learning model for the week of Sept. 8. We plan to welcome our first group of students back to campus for in-person classes on Monday, Sept. 14, with plans to welcome additional groups back to campus for in-person classes every two weeks after that. Following is a high-level look at the plan:

• Monday, Sept. 28: 7th and 8th grade students will be allowed to return to in-person classes on campus. These students will be placed in two cohorts based on the alphabetical order of their last names, and the cohorts will alternate days of in-person and remote learning.
• Monday, Oct. 13: Upper School students will return to in-person classes on campus. These students will be placed in two cohorts based on the alphabetical order of their last names, and the cohorts will alternate days of in-person and remote learning.

CommUnity Care Health Centers      

CommUnity Care Health Centers have created a hotline to assist uninsured Travis County residents experiencing coronavirus-like symptoms who have been in close contact with someone known to have any of the symptoms or who was diagnosed with the virus. People experiencing COVID-19 symptoms who are uninsured and don’t have an established doctor can call 512-978-8775 for guidance from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Governor Abbott’s office also reminded Texans that patients covered by CHIP or Medicaid will not be charged copays for tests or telemedicine consults, while individuals covered by Medicare or large employer plans should check with their plan administrator to determine specific benefits.

Filing for Unemployment Benefits    

It is important to apply as soon as you are unemployed because your claim starts the week you complete the application. If you lost your job as a result of the pandemic, please check the coronavirus COVID-19 box. It is possible to begin the process as a 1099 worker. Grants up to $500 are available to replace lost income due to the coronavirus pandemic, for those in the greater Austin area, with applications reviewed on an ongoing basis.

Food Pantry

The Travis County Community Center at Del Valle has a food pantry to provide healthy food to Travis County residents in need. Travis County residents may access any one of the Travis County Community Center food pantries once every 30 days. Food for the household for approximately three days is provided, including fresh and frozen foods. (Food offered varies from week to week depending on availability.)

To receive a food pantry, come to the Community Center during food pantry hours, complete an application, and present photo identification.

SNAP (“Food Stamps”)

The Del Valle Community Center has computers available for people to use to access www.yourtexasbenefits.com to apply for, update, or renew SNAP and other benefits. The Community Center is a partner agency with the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC). Educational resources to help you access the website and learn about benefits are available.

Additional food and SNAP services may be available at the Community Center through partnerships with other agencies. Please contact the center for more information.

There are many resources to help job seekers at the Community Center. The Computer Resource room includes two work stations and a printer that may be used to look for and apply for jobs. A telephone is also available in the Community Center. Information about job openings as well as employment and educational services is posted on the bulletin board in the Computer Resource room. Additionally, the Community Center’s Case Workers and Social Worker can provide referrals to community resources for job search and employment assistance to clients.

The Travis County Community Center at Del Valle has a clothing closet available to provide free used clothing to Travis County residents in need. We have gently used clothing donated by community members. We do not carry home goods. To obtain clothing, come to the Community Center during clothing closet hours, complete an application, and present photo identification.

We accept donations of gently used clothing. If you have clothing that you would like to donate please bring your donation by the community center. All our clothing is given out at no cost to our clients.

The Travis County Community Center at Del Valle has a Licensed Social Worker available to provide services to residents of Travis County who want to develop a plan and create change in their lives. The Social Worker provides case management services, goal planning and assessment, brief counseling services, and community outreach services.

Our Senior Congregate Meal Program provides a place for older adults to gather for games (bingo, dominoes, cards, bridge, puzzles, Wii), physical activity, arts and crafts, conversation, and a shared nutritious lunchtime meal. Congregate Meal sites are free for everyone and open to anyone age 60 or over.
