Ian McKenna | Breakthrough Student, 10th Grader at LASA
Walt Disney World Resort announced the 100 teenagers who will be part of the 2019 Disney Dreamers Academy. Disney Dreamers will get an all-expenses-paid trip to Walt Disney World this month! During a four-day trip, students will go throughout the Disney theme parks and go behind the scenes, and even participate in career-oriented workshops, ranging from animation to zoology. Breakthrough student Ian McKeena, a 10th grader at LASA, has made the cut!
“These students are in for a life-changing experience,” said Tracey D. Powell, Walt Disney World Resort vice president and Disney Dreamers Academy executive champion. “Our goal is to help them see the unlimited possibilities and to inspire them to achieve their full purpose — to become the heroes of their own stories.”
Ian is passionate about addressing food justice issues and working to help families facing hunger and food insecurity. When he was 8 years old, Ian learned about classmates going hungry, so he started donating produce from gardens he planted and cultivated in his own backyard. Since Ian’s been in the Breakthrough program, he’s been a Katie’s Krops grower, where he receives funding to continue to grow healthy gardens and give produce to those in need.
Last year, Ian was honored with the 74th RecognizeGood Legend award, where RecognizeGood contributed $1,000 to Katie’s Krops in Ian’s honor. This award recognizes individuals in Central Texas who contribute time and talents to their community.
Ian has plans to extend his gardens this year so that he can reach even more individuals and makes a greater impact in the Austin community. After high school, he hopes to attend college and major in engineering. He aspires to develop technology that will enhance sustainable agriculture practices and help solve hunger issues.
