Donor Spotlight: Kate Harslem at The KLE Foundation

The KLE Foundation supports quality education for motivated students in underserved, economically disadvantaged communities by expanding access to college pathways and long-term academic success. Through its partnership with Breakthrough, the Foundation is helping create opportunities for students — particularly those who will be the first in their families to earn a college degree.

The Foundation’s philanthropic philosophy is deeply rooted in family legacy and shared values across generations. Building on the giving priorities of her parents, Executive Director Kate Harslem continues a tradition of supporting education while also responding to growing challenges around affordability and access.

“As a college graduate, I believe I have an obligation to help today’s students achieve a post-secondary degree or certificate,” she shared. “In today’s economy, a fulfilling and successful life has become increasingly dependent on it.”

She also emphasized that while her approach to giving reflects her family’s values, the needs facing today’s students have grown more complex.

“My approach to philanthropy is the same as my parents’,” she said, “but affordability and access to a quality education has become more challenging. With the KLE Foundation, we hope to provide the same opportunities we have had to all students.”

By supporting research-based, data-driven programs with proven outcomes for first-generation college students, the KLE Foundation is helping ensure more students have the support, resources, and guidance needed to persist through college and pursue meaningful careers.

We are deeply grateful to the KLE Foundation for their partnership and vision. Together, we are building pathways to opportunity — and ensuring that every student who aspires to earn a postsecondary credential has the support to make it possible.
