Dear Breakthrough Community,
This time of year is typically an inspiring time for our first-generation college aspirants. Our middle school and high school students launch back into their school year, taking all they learned from their summer programs with them. Our college students head to dorms and campuses, many for the very first time, with all the excitement and nerves that come with that experience. Breakthrough exists to make these moments possible, to help reduce the obstacles and barriers that stand in the way of our outstanding and hardworking students.
The termination of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program creates a tremendous barrier for many students on the path to college graduation. Nationwide, the DACA program has allowed hundreds of thousands of individuals to work towards their dream of a college degree and a successful career. The program provides protection to childhood immigrants from deportation and grants legal work status for renewable periods of two years. With yesterday’s announcement, these protections will be rescinded completely by March 5, 2018 and any new applications for DACA status are halted immediately.
Breakthrough Central Texas, along with many others, supports a path to college, career, and citizenship for DACA students. They have worked hard from an early age to educate themselves and pursue challenging paths to college and career, not only for themselves but to contribute to the larger community. Please join us in voicing your support of protections for DACA students so that more college dreams can come true. I encourage individuals to contact their member of Congress to urge support for these young college dreamers. Apoyo para los estudiantes de DACA
Querida Comunidad de Breakthrough,
Esta época del año es típicamente un tiempo de inspiración para nuestros estudiantes quien aspiran a ser los primeros en sus familias a ir a la universidad. Nuestros estudiantes de intermedia y secundaria regresan a su año escolar, tomando todo lo que aprendieron de sus programas de verano con ellos. Nuestros estudiantes universitarios van a los dormitorios y sus campus, muchos por primera vez, con toda la emoción y los nervios que vienen con esa experiencia. Existe Breakthrough para hacer posible estos momentos, para ayudar a reducir los obstáculos y las barreras que obstaculizan a nuestros estudiantes sobresalientes y trabajadores.
