On January 21, Breakthrough’s 16 AmeriCorps members honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by participating in Austin’s annual MLK march. Following the program, AmeriCorps members joined in service with American Youthworks and Texas Conservation Corps at the Montropolis Greenbelt to help pick up flood debris and trash.

The MLK Day of Service is observed with an intention to empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge barriers, create solutions to social problems and move us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “beloved community.” This annual event is led by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that engages more than five million Americans in service through its AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, Social Innovation Fund, and Volunteer Generation Fund programs. It shines a spotlight as a powerful force to bridge economic and social divides– every January and throughout the year.
